Former New York Knicks center Tyson Chandler stated that he “feels sorry” for his old teammate Carmelo Anthony following a rout on Tuesday night in the favor of the Dallas Mavericks. I mean, can you blame Chandler? After all, Carmelo is now the face of the Knicks, who are a complete train wreck with an abysmal 5-22 record.

Sure enough, this is the Knicks’ first year under head coach Derek Fisher, but this slump in the Big Apple is a nightmare of epic proportions. I see why Chandler would be empathetic towards Anthony’s situation. Chandler knows Melo’s work ethic and competitive nature. It is tough seeing his former teammate suffer on a team that in all honesty is extremely unwatchable.

Many people may questioned how Melo could turn down the opportunity to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets and the Chicago Bulls to remain in New York. The answer is quite simple, and no, it is not the glitz and glamour that comes with being in Manhattan. I am sure Carmelo wanted to prove his loyalty to the city of New York and choose a different path than that of LeBron James, who four years ago bailed on the city of Cleveland to join two superstars with the Miami Heat.

However, Melo’s expectations for immediate success for the Knicks may have been set too high. Now is the time for the Knicks’ front office to pulling some strings in order to make some trades or draw in key free agents who can make an immediate impact for the Knicks. With the trade deadline two months away, this is the time for the franchise to do some mid-season scouting.

Being that team president Phil Jackson and his crew invested over $120 million in Melo over the next five years, it is absolutely vital that they keep him content. The only way of accomplishing that will be for the Knicks to complement him with a supporting cast that will move the team forward within the next year or two.
