The New York Knicks‘ pitiful season picked up some extra sourness Sunday afternoon as they fell to division rivals the Toronto Raptors, 118-108.
This most recent falter dropped New York to 5-25, and even with a subpar NBA Eastern Conference, the playoffs have almost slipped away. After a tough and circus-like season in which the Knicks missed the playoffs, Mike Woodson was removed as head coach, Phil Jackson was brought in to rebuild and Carmelo Anthony was retained; this year was supposed to be better. The problem with “supposed to” is it doesn’t always turn out that way.
As the headline reads, it is safe to say that this season is all but lost.
Even Derek Fisher‘s recent efforts to spark his team have failed to resonate with everyone in the locker room. Heck, the loss to Toronto gives New York its third losing streak of five or more games this season. Anthony has returned from a sore knee and has performed well the last two games with 25- and 28-point outings, but it still has not been enough to get into the win column.
Looking at the overall and bigger picture, if the Knicks get any worse then they will have some serious decisions to make.
Of all the decisions that will present themselves, Anthony and his health will be the biggest. Already, the franchise player has dealt with knee soreness and surgery has been discussed. Even ESPN has already talked about the Knicks deactivating Anthony for the reminder of the season. As crazy as that might seem, I somewhat agree with the philosophy.
At the prime age of 30 years old, Anthony is not getting any younger and has either already reached his pinnacle or is currently enjoying his golden years. This is the cornerstone that New York and James Dolan spent a pretty penny on to keep in the Big Apple. That being said, with expiring contracts, upcoming cap space and two upcoming free agent classes, the Knicks need to look toward the future. Anthony is already complaining about his knee. It would be foolish to let that manifest into something worse.
For any player, it is not easy to sit on the sideline and watch everyone else play. The competitive drive and love for the game make even injured players want to fight through the pain just to be on the hardwood. However, if Anthony does not want go an entire career without a title, he will consider the future and not the present.
