There are so many NBA teams that could use a talent such as veteran center Emeka Okafor. Unfortunately, the teams that have been trying to convince the free agent to sign with them will have to wait, as the 32-year-old is no rush to play this season.
The Dallas Mavericks, Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers are among a handful of teams that have shown interest in Okafor. Even though all teams that are attracted to him have talented rosters, it seems talent alone is not good enough for him to return to the NBAthis season.
Despite what some people may think about his decision resting solely on playing for a guaranteed playoff contender, Okafor actually is concerned about his neck. He missed the entire 2013-14 NBA season with a herniated disk. At his age, he wants to be sure there are no lingering issues before he makes the decision to return to the court. No one can blame him in that regard, especially since another injury to his neck could affect his life off the court.
It should be no secret as to why potential playoff contenders want his services. He has the appropriate skill set for a big man. He is an outstanding defender with above-average rebounding skills. If that was not enough, he also adds a decent offensive game to his arsenal. On a team that already has playmakers, Okafor would not be relied upon too heavily, which actually would allow him to excel when given the opportunity.
There is a good chance Okafor will take the rest of the season off in order to work on strength and conditioning. Still, there is no reason to rule anything out yet as he will leave the door open for a possible return this season.
