Los Angeles Lakers’ Nick Young Should Be A Part Of NBA All-Star Weekend In Some Form

He hasn’t met a shot he’s not willing to take, he tells Kobe Bryant no one in the world can guard him, and gave himself the popular nickname Swaggy P. Oh, did I forget to mention he told Magic Johnson to “chill” before he knocks him out — all for fun? There is no way this guy cannot be inserted into All-Star weekend for fun.

Without a doubt, Nick Young is one of the most popular and interesting personalities in the NBA today. Although his popularity might not come from being the best player in the league or on his team, he certainly is a fan favourite. He has given Los Angeles Lakers fans something to cheer about during this rough time.

So, the All-Star weekend is next month and there are less than 14 days until voting is completed. Last year, Young sat 14th in the Western Conference frontcourt with just over 45,000 votes. Chances are Young will not start in this year’s All-Star game. However, dazzling plays in real games should count for something.

That leaves us with Shooting Star Competition, Skills Challenge, Slam Dunk Contest, and 3-Point Challenge. Cancel out the skills challenge because Young doesn’t have the passing ability or the speed to keep up with the best guards in the NBA. Young has shown his dunking skills by making a couple of posters and throwing down 360 dunks, but once again, there are several new talents (Zach LaVine, Andrew Wiggins and others) along with high vertical players who are favoured to be in the contest.

We are now left with Shooting Stars Challenge and 3-Point contest. The former usually requires a superstar, so lets just say Young isn’t selected to compete in that either. That leaves us with the 3-Point Competition, which Young fits perfectly.

Young has shot a career-high 43 percent from behind the arc this season and is seventh in 3-point percentage so far this season. Swaggy P might be better at coming off a screen and shooting or creating his own shot, but with the amount of ridiculous threes (and four-point plays) he has made, there is no telling how far he can go in this competition.

But hey, the worst-case scenario is that he doesn’t score much, but fans will sure have a laugh at what he as to say about his performance, good or bad.
