The Los Angeles Lakers stand at 11-25, far away from playoff contention. Los Angeles has expiring contracts and player exceptions to use to acquire future assets. Here are five trades that could help the Lakers plug holes for next year.

The enigmatic Lance Stephenson has not panned out with the Charlotte Hornets. He signed a three-year deal in the offseason, and his name is already on the block. If Stephenson can stay focused, he can be an excellent addition for Los Angeles. The 24 year old can be a triple-double threat when his head is in the game.

Gerald Green spent some time with the Lakers’ D-League affiliate and they let him get away. He would bring much needed athleticism to a team lacking in that department. Green has an expiring deal with the Phoenix Suns; the Suns have too many guards on the roster and may be expendable.

3. Michael Carter-Williams

The reigning Rookie of the Year’s name surfaced in the rumor mill over the summer, and the Lakers were interested in his services. The Lakers have not had a decent point guard since Magic Johnson; Michael Carter-Williams is averaging 14 points, six rebounds and seven assists a game for the Philadelphia 76ers -- the Lakers should do everything they can to bring him to Los Angeles.

2. Brook Lopez

The Brooklyn Nets have made their three stars available to the NBA. Brook Lopez has been hampered by injuries throughout his career, but when healthy, he is an excellent post player. This may be an opportune moment for L.A. to bring a star to the Staples Center. Lopez is only 27 years old and would form a nice front-court duo with Julius Randle. They need to start bringing in talent now or risk striking out with free agents again.

Carter-Williams would be great, but Goran ragic would be more attainable. The Lakers need a capable point guard to keep up with the Western Conference, and they could use his 16-point average and five dimes a game. The crafty Slovenian would be an excellent piece to add to the Lakers' rebuilding project.
