Although Tony Wroten’s stock may never be any higher, the Philadelphia 76ers should not be in any rush to trade their third-year guard.

Since the calendar turned to 2015, Wroten has played some of the best basketball of his professional career. The 76ers’ leading scorer has averaged an impressive 21.8 PPG in the last four games. He even capped of a 20-point performance by hitting the go-ahead shot with 9.1 seconds left in Philadelphia’s most recent win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Wroten’s most recent stretch has been noticed by everyone within the franchise. More importantly, it has been noticed by people outside of the franchise as well.

After sending guard Jared Cunningham and cash to Philadelphia in an attempt to free up a roster spot, reports surfaced that the Los Angeles Clippers had made inquires about the the 76ers’ willingness to part ways with Wroten. Although no deal appears imminent, one has to wonder if GM Sam Hinkie is questioning whether or not to sell high on one of his most valuable assets.

Since he stepped into the role of GM for the 76ers, Hinkie has operated under the philosophy that each one of his players is an asset. Just like on the stock market, if Hinkie can move one asset for what he perceives to be a more valuable asset or group of assets, than he will undoubtedly do it. With the 76ers in the midst of a long and tedious rebuilding process, implementing this strategy is often the right move.

In Wroten’s case, however, it is not.

Although he may be playing some of his best basketball, Hinkie and the 76ers are not going to get a package even remotely close to what the Denver Nuggets just received in return for center Timofey Mozgov. Whatever package they may be offered right now for Wroten is likely going to be worth the same as, or even less than the packages they will be offered at the NBA’s trade deadline.

At that time, teams in playoff contention will be desperate to increase the scoring production that comes off of their bench. With teams being desperate, the king of all NBA trades, Hinkie, will then be able to work his magic.

With the city as a whole not experiencing much success in the sports department lately, Wroten’s fun yet sometimes frustrating style of play has become an almost must-watch right now. The value of this alone is higher than anything the 76ers would receive by trading him. So even if it’s just for a few more weeks, Hinkie and the 76ers need to hold on to Wroten not only for their benefit, but for the benefit of the entire city of Philadelphia.
