Trading For Jose Calderon Would Be A Wise Move for Phil Jackson, New York Knicks

Maybe there is some truth to the latest rumors surrounding the possible trade of New York Knicks guard Jose Calderon.

If the Knicks’ players are supposed to be fighting for their future, as team president Phil Jackson continues his official ‘rebuild’ and blowing up of the current roster, Calderon had a funny way of showing he wanted to stay.

Calderon went a horrid 0-for-7 from the field and scored no points in 21 minutes as the Knicks fell 120-96 to the Houston Rockets on Thursday night, extending their franchise-worst single-season losing streaks to an embarrassing 14 games and counting. Most of Calderon’s numbers have plummeted this season, and despite a slight improvement to his three-point shooting percentage, everything else dropped in comparison to his career stats.

Jackson has already pulled off one deal this week, as the Knicks were part of a three-team, six-player deal also involving the Cleveland Cavaliers and Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Knicks gave up J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert in an effort to clear room for their salary cap, and Calderon could very well be the next target — at least that’s the buzz out of The Big Apple and reports. Everyone from The Bleacher Report to the NY Post says the former legendary coach appears poised to make another deal, and this time Calderon looks like an obvious target. But other basketball insiders, like Keneth Burger of CBS sports, note that the two years and $15 million left on Calderon’s contract may be too much for any interested parties to stomach. His recent performance hasn’t helped matters either.

But the deal for Calderon makes sense, and despite his recent slump in New York, he has shown brilliance in the past with the Toronto Raptors and Detroit Pistons. Since good teams make good players better, Calderon may really just need a fresh beginning somewhere else in order to excel again.

There were a few bright spots for the Knicks despite their latest collapse to Houston. Rookie Travis Wear had a season-high 21 points, while NBA Development League call-up Langston Galloway scored 19. At least they have something to build on.

But things don’t get much easier for the Knicks. On Saturday, they face a red-hot Charlotte Bobcats team that just recorded their fourth consecutive win by dumping the Raptors also on Thursday.
