Miami Heat Need To Shake Up Roster

For a team from a state as sunny as Florida, the Miami Heat’s third quarters have sure been as dreary as a New York winter.

It is pretty unexplainable how much Miami resembles a decent basketball team for two quarters, then falls into looking like the five-win team that runs around a packed Madison Square Garden on a nightly basis. So we will not waste much time focusing on how they shoot 33 percent in the third quarter and are outscored by 17 points, to turn a five-point lead into a 12-point deficit.

No need to stampede a dead horse. As Charles Barkley says, the Heat stink. So now comes the time for team president Pat Riley to either break the team down or make a move.

With the Memphis Grizzles pulling off last night’s trade for the Boston CelticsJeff Green, and the Heat’s steady denials of allowing talks to progress pass inquires, small forward Luol Deng seems safe. But after hearing Dwyane Wade talk about the lack of team chemistry, it would be hard to believe that the front office haven’t at least thought about what tanking could do for them.

The issue is that Miami’s protected 2015 first round draft pick that traveled from Cleveland to Philadelphia (by way of Minnesota) won’t be theirs unless they drop far enough to land within the top 10 selections. That would mean that the Heat would need to be even better at losing than they are now. And perhaps throw in a stretch of epic player maintenance for Wade and Chris Bosh along the way.

In the minds of many, the only other alternative is to dig in, stick the struggle out and hope for more Riley magic in 2016. Which is the plan, or was at least thought to be the plan with all of the two-year contracts signed in the offseason. Speculation Wade does not seem to be in the mood for:

“Nobody knows what’s going to happen in 2016; 2016, to me, is so far away and I hope people aren’t waiting on it thinking we’re going to land this quote, unquote Big Fish because it might not happen for you. No one knows if Riley is going to wait until 2016. It’s all speculation.” (Miami Herald)

Capitalizing on one of the big names of 2015 may be an option. They can either attempt to clear space in order to sign a big name, or perhaps do it the Miami way and try to talk a player into signing a cheap contract for a year with the promise of taking care of him in 2016.

If not, next season could be just as disastrous as this one, and no one should want to waste another great Wade year.
