Using the NBA Trade Machine To Reshape the NBA

intro
NBA Trade Machine

ESPN's NBA Trade Machine is a delightful tool that can be used for good or evil depending on which team you are trying to improve, and it is always fun to see which role players on high salaries could be moved for potential superstars. Here are some different scenarios I have concocted using the machine that would reshape the NBA as we know it.

5. Brooklyn Nets and New Orleans Pelicans

Wouldn't Joe Johnson be a perfect fit on the New Orleans Pelicans? That is a squad in desperate need of a quality shooting guard, and they have long since lost their use for Eric Gordon. This trade featuring Gordon and Ryan Anderson could work in a deal with the Brooklyn Nets, but the Pels would likely have to give up a draft pick for this to happen in reality.

4. Cleveland Cavaliers and Detroit Pistons

What move would make the Cleveland Cavaliers legitimate contenders? How about grabbing Greg Monroe from the Detroit Pistons in exchange for Tristan Thompson? This trade might anger LeBron James, but it works according to the cap. Monroe would give the Cavs a true post presence.

3. Houston Rockets and Atlanta Hawks

The Houston Rockets pushed most of their chips to the middle of the table by picking up Josh Smith, but I think it could be fun if they went all in. Trading Patrick Beverley and Jason Terry for the red hot Jeff Teague would be a move that truly signals a championship or bust approach. The Rockets might have to add a draft pick for this trade to be realistically palatable for Atlanta.

2. San Antonio Spurs and Charlotte Hornets

Let's completely shake up a team from each conference. The San Antonio Spurs could use another third wheel in case Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili retire, and Gregg Popovich would find a way for Lance Stephenson to find contentment. Trading Danny Green and Marco Belinelli might anger fans, but this experiment seems perfect from a comedic perspective.

1. Indiana Pacers and Toronto Raptors

Free David West! The Indiana Pacers are long removed from their days of title contention, and the power forward deserves a chance to help a legitimate contender. He would be a fun fit on the Toronto Raptors, and they could grab him for the price of Amir Johnson and Landry Fields. This is not a lot to get back for Indiana, but I'd love to see Toronto have a real shot at winning the East.
