Los Angeles Lakers Bringing Wesley Johnson Back Still A Question Mark

The Los Angeles Lakers were clearly not trying to break the bank when they brought Wesley Johnson back to a one-year deal. It looked like a great contract for a player who had a decent, inconsistent year the previous season. Johnson has all the attributes to be a very good player, and possesses the length and athleticism that most players wish they had. However, he continues to underperform, and it is unclear midway through the season if the Lakers were right to bring him back.

Johnson is one of those players who will have great moments, followed by “What was he thinking?” plays. He can make the highlight dunk, game-changing blocks and even provide solid one-on-one defense when he wants to, but he follows up those great plays with air balls, bad passes and questionable decision-making. His inconsistent play has been frustrating for the team, as they know he has what it takes to make it in the league. It has plagued him throughout his career, and this year is no different.

The Lakers were looking for value players when filling out their roster this summer, and Johnson’s willingness to come back for a cheap price made him an attractive option. The potential is still there, although he still cannot put it all together. He can fill up the stat sheet and produce big games on the defensive end of the court, but has not been able to help the Lakers win many games. The decision to bring him back for another season remains a question mark, as he still needs to prove that he can play consistently on a nightly basis.
