The Los Angeles Clippers waived Jordan Farmar on Sunday, freeing him to sign with any team he desires. The Los Angeles Lakers should consider bringing him back.
The Lakers are atrocious this year with a 12-29 record. They are destined to be a lottery team, which ensures they keep their 2015 draft pick. Jeremy Lin has been a bust so far for Los Angeles, losing his starting job to journeyman Ronnie Price; he has not lived up to expectations.
Price has played admirably for the purple and gold, but he will not be part of the future. The Lakers should strongly consider bringing back one of their own. Farmar enjoyed his best years as a pro donning the Laker colors. He, as he’s been a part of two championship teams with Los Angeles.
Last season, he averaged 10 points on 41 percent shooting; he shot 43 percent from the three-point line. Unfortunately, he was hampered by injuries last year, but when he was on the floor, he played very well. Realistically, it was not a good fit for him to back up All-Star point guard Chris Paul. With the Lakers, he was free to play his style of game.
The Lakers are thin at point guard with Price hurt. Steve Nash is gone for the season, Lin has underperformed as a starter, and Jordan Clarkson is not ready. Farmar is familiar with Kobe Bryant, and he would also add depth at the guard spot while Bryant takes games off to rest. Farmar is an upgrade over Price, and Lin has found a comfortable rhythm with the second unit.
Adding Farmar would reunite him with his buddy Nick Young and perhaps help him snap out of his funk; the Lakers could use the extra energy and scoring from the 27 year old out of UCLA. They formed a strong friendship despite playing for rival schools, and there is a comfort level between not only Farmar Young, but between Farmar and the Lakers’ organization.
Lin could benefit with Farmar on the roster as well. The added competition would keep Lin on his toes and help him perform better. The Lakers’ bench has excelled with Carlos Boozer, Lin and Swaggy P, but with Farmar in the mix, it would make the bench even more potent.
All signs are pointing to Farmar joining the Cleveland Cavaliers, but selfishly I would like to see him form the dynamic duo of Farmar and Young again.
