The Miami Heat announced Saturday that All-Star power forward Chris Bosh will miss the remainder of the season while being treated for blood clots in his lungs. Team officials are saying his prognosis is good.

This is an unfortunate turn of events for the Heat, who have battled injuries all throughout this year. After acquiring Goran Dragic in a NBA trade deadline deal on Thursday, it appeared as though they might have a realistic shot at making some noise in the playoffs this year.

Unfortunately, with Bosh being out for the rest of the season, this effectively cripples the team’s chances to be a legitimate playoff team this season. Because of this, it also will not be surprising if Dragic walks at the end of the year and joins a contender as a free agent this offseason.

The news is sad for many reasons, but it serves as an important reminder to everyone that life comes before basketball. The fact that Bosh’s prognosis is good is encouraging, because at the end of the day basketball is just a game, and life is what matters most.

In recent years, Bosh has been a target by many NBA fans who started disliking the Heat when he and LeBron James were recruited by Dwyane Wade to join the team in the summer of 2010. In my opinion, people have been very cruel towards Bosh over the last few years, making fun of him mostly for his inconsistent play. If you listen to the interviews he does and how he carries himself on and off the court, he seems like a super nice guy who truly cares for other people.

I hope he returns to play basketball next season, but most importantly, I hope he is able to fully recover from this setback and live a long and prosperous life.
