The New Orleans Pelicans are a beak's length from the eighth seed in the NBA’s Western conference. New Orleans trails the Oklahoma City Thunder by just one game, and could definitely close the gap if they secure victory in these five must-win games.

Marc Gasol, Z-Bo, and company come to town on the 7th, and this will be the first true must-win game for Anthony Davis and the Pelicans. Davis appears to be coming into his own, and if he can continue to drop 24 points and 10 rebounds, New Orleans can drop Memphis.

This is must-win because the Pelicans must pluck weaker Eastern conference teams at every opportunity. On the road, though, it’s a shorter trip than New Orleans is accustomed to, which amounts to a game that’s even more winnable.

Golden State is the NBA’s team to beat, and a possible first-round opponent of the Pelicans. It’d be great for New Orleans to draw first blood and get a victory on the Splash Brothers’ launching pad.

This is a home game against a team just as desperate to improve their playoff positioning. Beating the Rockets can get the ball rolling, and if it’s a snowball effect for the Pelicans, they could surge not just into the eighth playoff spot, but possibly beyond.

The Pelicans’ last game of the regular season is on their home floor and against the defending champs. You can bet your best pair of Clarks loafers they’ll be hyped for this game — that is if they can remain in playoff contention until the end.
