Randy Wittman is not my favorite head coach in the NBA, and that might be the understatement of this decade. I happen to think he is one of the five worst coaches in the league, but he deserves some credit for his recent response to a Washington Post report that John Wall clashed with team doctors after finding out about the five fractures in his left hand and wrist.

First of all, Wall deserved to be a little bit ticked, because it was initially thought to be a sprain. I don’t know the ins and outs of how an X-ray machine works, but I suppose it is possible that his hand’s swelling blocked the machine’s view of the breaks. The PG was probably just angry at the situation, and he took it out on doctors. But Wittman was correct to speak up for his player’s credibility.
The Washington Wizards may not have any title hopes left in these playoffs with Wall facing such a serious injury, but they can still beat the Atlanta Hawks in their current series, especially after the Paul Pierce game-winner. Wittman will keep his job next year based on how well his players have played, and that is unfortunate for the future of this team. He does deserve kudos for standing by Wall, although it must be noted that the story which ignited Wittman’s rage came from the Post’s reputable Michael Lee. He is not in the habit of writing false stories, and so it is likely that Wall did express some rage at the doctors.
Expect the PG to test the limits of human pain by returning before this series is over, and here is hoping that he does not make the injury worse by playing through it. The future of the Wizards as a contending franchise is clearly at stake. Wittman is just doing his best to protect it.
