The Cleveland Cavaliers will appear in their first Eastern Conference Finals since 2009. A common denominator is LeBron James. However, it is the star of Cleveland who was drafted No. 1 overall in 2011 who could be the difference maker. In fact, point guard Kyrie Irving is willing to do whatever it takes to help the Cavaliers on the game’s biggest stage, assuming his knee allows him to.

All signs point to Irving suiting up for Game 1 against the Atlanta Hawks, even though injury concerns will be present throughout the contest. The good news is he has had plenty of time to rest, which should benefit him greatly on the court. Even better, Irving is motivated to be productive for his team, especially when considering how important the series is to the franchise.

“This is the biggest stage that you want to be part of,” Irving said, according to ESPN. “Obviously people strive in the regular season to get to the playoffs and now I see absolutely why. There’s nothing like the playoffs. Nothing at all. Whatever seeding you are, it’s a big-time game. Everyone is watching and you want to be a part of it.”

In Cleveland’s clincher over the Chicago Bulls last Thursday, Irving only saw 12 minutes of action due to pain in his left leg. As serious as it seemed then, it appears there is optimism around the team that he has fresh legs underneath him. A solid day of light practice on Tuesday solidified any doubts onlookers may have had. Even though there is still reason to be somewhat concerned, the reality is Irving will be well rested enough to be a difference maker in the game.

Many have picked Cleveland to emerge victorious in the series, but that only happens if Irving stays healthy. Not only is he a big part of the Cavaliers’ offensive game plan, but also they will need him defensively to slow down Hawks All-Star Jeff Teague.
