Tom Thibodeau was once hired as an assistant coach on the Washington Wizards for less than a week when Eddie Jordan was running the ship, but Thibs went back on the offer before any signatures were on the dotted line. Will the Wizards consider firing Randy Wittman and hiring Thibodeau one more time? They will probably stick with Wittman for now, but it would not be that bad of an idea to pair Thibs with an elite point guard like John Wall.
We all saw the heights he took Derrick Rose to before the ACL tear, and he could definitely do it again with Wall in the District. The Chicago Bulls fired Thibodeau with such a lack of respect and class that any coaching job would look like a luxury after that experience. Thibs is not an offensive mastermind, but he has no problem delegating responsibility and could assemble an excellent staff in Washington. The Bulls famously fired defensive specialist Ron Adams without Thibodeau’s consent, and Adams is now helping the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals.
Thibodeau will obviously be looking for a good relationship with the front office in his next stop, and that is excellent for the Wizards because Ernie Grunfeld worked with him during his time with the New York Knicks. Thibs would also do wonders when it comes to keeping Paul Pierce in town; the two worked together with the Boston Celtics during their 2008 title run, and that was the job he ended up passing on the Wizards for.
Thibodeau could make up for reneging on his commitment by coming to Washington now. Most likely the head coach will lead the New Orleans Pelicans next season, but if revenge against the Bulls is a factor then the Wizards could be the clear choice for him. The watered down Eastern Conference is a nice place to be if you are a coach who likes making the playoffs, and Thibodeau would be a great fit in Washington if they would only move on from Wittman.
