No one knows the entire story behind the Rajon Rondo-Dallas Mavericks debacle other than that Rondo essentially quit in the middle of the game and series on the Mavs. No one knows if Rick Carlisle was the issue or if Mark Cuban ran his mouth. Heck, it could be as easy as Rondo just hating Dallas and the state of Texas. Between George H.W. and George W. Bush, that is enough to want out of any state.
All light-heartedness and politics aside, Rondo will be in search of a new home and he should have plenty of options to choose from. Whether or not those options are championship contenders is another story. Anyway, many believe that the point guard’s ego fits well with the Los Angeles Lakers and that seems to be the only rumor with any legs at the moment.
Then there is the Miami Heat and the team’s intriguing and complex point guard situation. Mario Chalmers is locked in for next season, but he is no better than a bench and role player. Then there is Goran Dragic, who is considered a shooting guard, but fits in at the point. He is likely to opt out of his $7.5 million option and seek a max contract. The latest news is that he will resign in South Beach, but there should be some sort of backup plan.
The plan will steer clear of Rondo and his egomaniacal ways. Pat Riley has been known to take on rebels and attempt to reform them, but only if the price is right. Rondo has the potential to be a $120 million headache or Godsend. For Riley, that is not a gamble worth taking, especially after the Dallas incident. Despite the subtle rumors that Miami might target Rondo, those are as far-fetched as Sarah Palin winning a Presidential Election.
