5 Free Agency Mistakes the Miami Heat Must Avoid in 2015

If the free agency of 2010 taught you anything, it was that one month in the offseason can transform an organization into a surefire juggernaut. The summer of 2014 showed that a simple move could shift that status just as easily as it was gained. But there are always ways to make it worse, like these five free agency mistakes the Miami Heat must avoid in 2015.

A lineup of Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade, Goran Dragic, Hassan Whiteside, Josh McRoberts, Mario Chalmers, Udonis Haslem and Chris Andersen sounds pretty formidable in a weak Eastern Conference. But the Heat can screw that all up by thinking too far in advance and making trades with an eye on how to fit this year’s potential max contracts with that of Whiteside and other 2016 free agents.

Even if the Heat retain Wade, Deng and Dragic and add a quality rookie through the draft, Pat Riley cannot ignore the team’s need for depth. If he does, the team will be left to rely on the D-League for the second year in a row.

Two of the biggest mistakes the Heat made last offseason were to offer Danny Granger a contract before they even lost LeBron and signing Shannon Brown to be Dwyane Wade’s backup. Both ended up being veterans who could no longer contribute or make it to the end of the season.

2. Overpaying

The fact that Pat Riley basically mortgaged away the future by shipping two future first-round picks to Phoenix for Goran Dragic -- along with one still owed from the LeBron James 2010 sign-and-trade -- means that the free agent point guard has all of the leverage. However, it would be a mistake for the Heat to just dish out a max contract without trying to get a South Beach discount.

The most destructive thing that the Heat could do is to let pride get in the way of re-signing the man who has been the face of their franchise for the past 11 seasons. Letting a dispute over job security and previous money sacrificed spoil a relationship would automatically sack the organization.
