The Golden State Warriors are not the only team with an electrifying backcourt. Starting next season, many teams are going to get a taste of the Orlando Magic‘s “Flash Brothers” of Victor Oladipo and Elfrid Payton.
The Flash Brothers was coined by Magic fan EJ Magic, and that may be an apt tagline for a duo that has the potential to unseat the Splash Brothers as the best backcourt tandem in the NBA.
Oladipo has really blossomed into one of the rising stars in the league. Everybody knows of his defense, but he has surprised all of his critics by being a better than expected offensive player, as he was the team’s second leading scorer with 17.9 points.
Payton was everything Orlando hoped he would be when they traded for him in the 2014 NBA Draft. He can blow by opponents and finish at the rim, and he is a floor general that sets up his teammates for success on the court. In addition to his offensive skills, he is a tenacious defender that, with more seasoning, will be among the top defenders in the league.
With Scott Skills and Adrian Griffin on board, the Flash Brothers will only shine in a system that will be built around their strengths. Sure, they may not have the sweet shooting of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, but they’re a better defensive backcourt, and they can create their own offense off the dribble, something that Thompson has trouble doing at times.
So while the Splash Brothers will dominate the NBA for the next two seasons, the Flash Brothers of Orlando has an excellent chance at becoming the next best backcourt in the NBA. And that is not a stage joke.
