Fixing the Washington Wizards This Offseason in 5 Easy Steps

Paul Pierce hasn't bailed yet. That is a positive thing any fans of the Washington Wizards can hold onto so far this offseason, and hopefully they'll get other good news in the return of a healthy John Wall for the 2015-16 campaign. Many pundits forget to mention how great of a playoff run he was having until an untimely wrist injury derailed things. If the Wizards follow these steps, then they could contend in the East next season.

We all saw what "The Truth" is capable of during the playoffs. He almost single-handedly eliminated the Toronto Raptors, and Pierce nearly pulled off another buzzer-beater against the Atlanta Hawks in Game 6. His departure to the Los Angeles Clippers seems far less likely after their recent trade for Lance Stephenson. So, the Wizards have that going in their favor. They must now hope Pierce doesn't just retire.

There is more than a little bit of buzz that Kevin Durant will consider coming home in the summer of 2016, and this means the Wizards must at least have cap space for one maximum contract during that time. Any other move they can make this offseason to improve their team should be considered, but KD will have the option of joining the Wizards next July.

Wall and Bradley Beal must have better health next season. That may not seem like "fixing" the Wizards in some ways, but it is the most important element to their chances of overcoming Eastern Conference teams such as the Cleveland Cavaliers and Chicago Bulls. Maybe Washington's young backcourt should try out some yoga to keep their arms and legs nimble later in the year.

Nene and Kris Humphries both got a lot of run during the regular season, but they came up short when it was time to deliver productive playoff minutes. The Wizards should look for a backup big man in the draft like Trey Lyles who could give them a more reliable option off the bench. Trading Nene might also be a possibility for upgrading their reserves.

1. Get A New Coach

Randy Wittman is no longer the answer for this team. The Wizards don't necessarily need Tom Thibodeau's lack of tact or offensive ingenuity, but he would bring a different intensity to Washington during the daily grind. He is also currently available. Unfortunately, Wittman will probably be back next season, and the Wizards will continue to tread water as a result.
