Over the past two years winning on the court has been tough for the Philadelphia 76ers, but Thursday night the team won off the court when they unveiled their new uniforms.
Channeling the ones worn by past greats such as Wilt Chamberlain, Billy Cunningham and Julius “Dr. J” Erving – along with many others — the 76ers’s new uniforms have many different features that will be familiar to the fans of the franchise.
Just like the uniforms once worn by Chamberlain, the 76ers will now feature the text “Phila” across the chest of the jersey as opposed to text that previously read “Sixers.” Also, in homage to the uniforms worn during the 1976-77 season, the franchise’s new uniforms will feature stars running down each side. To be exact, one side will feature seven stars while the other will feature six.

In a time when the branding of a product is of the utmost importance, owners and executives of sports franchises try to make the logo and the uniforms that their players wear trendy and modern. Often times however, these attempts fail (I’m thinking about Steve Ballmer). Rather than going down this path and trying to make their franchise as current as possible, the 76ers instead wisely went back in time and called upon things that have already worked in the past.
When they take to the court later this year to begin the 2015-16 NBA season, the 76ers will not be the most talented team in the league. However, there is no question that they will rank right up there as one of the league’s best dressed teams. It will take time before this current 76ers team wins on the court, but if you are a fan of the franchise take solace in knowing that Thursday night your team certainly won off of the court.
