D’Angelo Russell did not receive as much attention entering college as other freshmen such as Jahlil Okafor or Kentucky’s top-rated class. But by the end of the year, there was little doubt he was among the best and will certainly be one of the top draft picks this summer. The Los Angeles Lakers are always looking for their next superstar and are going to want to hit a home run in the upcoming draft with their second pick. There are two very good big men who are rated at the top of most draft boards, but Russell would be an intriguing choice as he has the makings of a future star in the league.
Russell plays the game with style and flare and is extremely confident in his abilities. He wants the ball and wants to make game-changing plays for his team. He is a phenomenal passer and possesses great court vision. He often sees plays happening before everyone else, allowing him to throw the ball to his teammates all over the court with purpose, setting them up for easy baskets.
The problem for defenses is that he combines his passing skills with a lethal scoring ability. He shot a high percentage from the three-point line in college and displayed range that will translate well in the pros. He is already a very good ball handler and players struggle to stay in front of him. Once he gets by his initial defender, he is comfortable pulling up for a mid-range shot, but even better at getting to the rim and finishing with his left hand. Defenders have to make tough decisions on whether to help or leave their man open, as Russell has no problem getting easy shots for his teammates.
Russell’s lack of elite athleticism does create cause for concern, although it is mostly on the defensive end. We have seen very skilled players be top offensive threats despite average athleticism, but it is on defense where they struggle. His size should allow him to play either guard position, but he will likely need to be paired with a very good defender in the back court. The good news is that Russell has shown a high basketball IQ and can become an adequate team defender in the future.
Russell is not afraid of the spotlight and will be an entertaining player to watch. He is a very good ball-handler, an excellent passer and a dominant scorer, which makes him extremely difficult to guard. He can make the flashy plays that get the crowd going and wants the ball in his hands when it matters most. There are concerns about his athleticism, but his passion for the game and offensive skill set makes him an intriguing prospect. The Lakers need to find a star player for when Kobe Bryant retires, and Russell is the type of player who could thrive in Los Angeles.
