It was a head-scratcher at the trade deadline when the Houston Rockets settled for acquiring rookie guard K.J. McDaniels from the Philadelphia 76ers instead of a savvy veteran to help them in the playoffs. With the season now over, Houston has set their eyes on re-signing McDaniels, a move that would be a clear mistake.
It is certainly understandable that the Rockets want to continue loading the roster with young talent. However, after clinching the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference and having a berth in the Western Conference Finals, it is clear Houston is much more than a team that is building for the future. The future is now, and they need talented veterans to surround center Dwight Howard and guard James Harden in order to take the next step.
Watching the Golden State Warriors not only defeat them in the Western Conference Finals, but also win their first NBA championship since 1975 with a young team gives the Rockets the confidence that it can be done that way. Houston should not completely avoid employing a young roster, especially when considering how many first-round draft picks they have. However, signing new talents in free agency to help get them over the hump is clearly the way to go.
McDaniels, as athleticism as he may be, does not have the stellar offensive game the Rockets need. He could evolve into a defensive specialist, but that more or less becomes a waste of space at the guard position. Even though it should not take much to re-sign him financially, it would still be an improper use of funds.
Houston has plenty of work ahead of them this summer, which is good because the multiple opportunities could create wonderful possibilities next season.
