Miami Heat Will Be Smart To Stash Josh Richardson Overseas

Over the years, the second round of the NBA Draft has been a breeding ground of sorts for the Miami Heat.

The franchise has been known to hoard picks in the 30s and 40s as a way to ease the team’s salary. But with the possibility of Josh McRoberts, Mario Chalmers and Chris Andersen being on the move, you would expect Pat Riley and the Miami brain trust to bring in a rookie who can fill one of the multiple voids on their lackluster bench, much like they got when Duke’s Justise Winslow slid to them in the first round.

Unfortunately for Tennessee’s Josh Richardson, he likely will not be wearing a Heat jersey this year, or ever. The 6-foot-6 shooting guard is a quality wing defender who averaged 16 points per game during his senior season, but the athlete will probably be spending his time in Europe due to space and his lack of an elite shot.

With players like Dwyane Wade, James Ennis, Tyler Johnson, Chalmers, Winslow and possibly Luol Deng in front of him, it will be hard for Richardson to crack the rotation beyond being a splash for the Heat’s summer league team. It was a very smart move by the organization to save a little salary.
