The Golden State Warriors bench played a huge role throughout the team’s historic NBA championship run, but there’s no denying that second unit did have two obvious holes. The roster as a whole was the best collection of shooters in the league, but the reserves really struggled from behind the three-point line, and even though Leandro Barbosa was great in the Finals,  Steve Kerr didn’t have a reliable backup shooting guard to go to.

According to Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports, the Warriors have targeted one free agent who would solve both problems.

With nearly the entire roster set to return (Draymond Green is absolutely going to re-sign) and with the team up against the salary cap, there are not many realistic moves general manager Bob Myers can make to improve the team. Marco Belinelli is one option who would without a doubt have a positive impact.

Since they’ll be in the luxury tax, the Warriors can pay Belinelli using the tax-payer mid-level exception, which starts at $3.4 million. Belinelli will likely get more lucrative offers from other teams, but playing for the best team in the NBA might be too enticing to pass up.

The Warriors drafted Belinelli with the No. 18 overall pick back in 2007 when Don Nelson was the team’s head coach. As has been the case with several players, Belinelli didn’t work well under Nelson and was traded to the Toronto Raptors for Devean George in 2009.

After shuffling between a few teams, Belinelli finally found a home with the San Antonio Spurs in 2013. The sweet-shooting Italian played a big role in the Spurs’ championship that season, hitting threes at crucial points in the playoffs. In his two seasons with San Antonio, Belinelli played 142 games, making 34 starts and averaged 11.4 and 9.3 points per game.

Belinelli is a career 39.2-percent shooter from three. With Andre Iguodala (34.9 3P% and 1.0 3PM in 2014) expected to return to the bench, the Warriors don’t have a three-point threat to call on from their second unit.

Leandro Barbosa isn’t expected to return, and even if he does, the 32-year-old isn’t consistent enough to deserve regular playing time.

Belinelli is a perfect fit to play alongside Shaun Livingston and Iguodala on the second unit.
