DeMarre Carroll was a wonderful servant to the Atlanta Hawks, but that came at a huge discount to what he’s set to make for the next few years. Carroll has signed a four-year contract worth $60 million to play for the Toronto Raptors.

Good for him, but there was no way the Hawks should have ever entertained that amount for Carroll. Someone was always going to pay big for him this offseason. I’m still having trouble believing that $15 million per season is where it went though. That is a huge amount of money for a man of Carroll’s skill set. He is an elite three and D guy who just recently learned how to shoot. Let’s take a look at what probably the best three and D guy in the NBA hauled in earlier today.

That is $15 million less total over the same length. They are very comparable players. Both are top tier defensive players, with Danny Green probably being slightly better. They are both good three-point shooters, again with Green being the slightly better shooter. They are both 28 years old, so where does this $15 million gap come into play? I get that Green took a discount to go back to the San Antonio Spurs, but $15 million?

Good on Carroll for making up for years of low salaries, and the Raptors look to be a major threat with his services. I just have a hard time believing that what he does is worth that much money. If he doesn’t improve at all, is he really worth $60 million over four years? Not for me. Good business by the Hawks to get out before his price went way up. There are other options out there.
