The Chicago Bulls are closing in on accomplishing by far their biggest goal of the offseason. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, the Bulls and All-Star shooting guard Jimmy Butler are finalizing a five-year, $95 million maximum contract.

Butler, the NBA’s Most Improved Player for the 2014-15 season, is coming off one of the biggest breakout seasons we’ve seen in some time. In 65 games, Butler averaged 20.0 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. In addition to his offensive outburst, Butler remained one of the best defensive guards in the league.

League sources have also told Wojnarowski that teams in pursuit of Butler have conceded and moved on. The 25-year-old was a restricted free agent, so the Bulls likely would have matched any offer sheet he signed with another team.

With new head coach and offensive mastermind Fred Hoiberg now running things in Chicago, Butler’s offensive numbers may improve even more this upcoming season. He shot an impressive 37.8-percent from three-point range and the Bulls will need him to continue shooting that well because threes will be a great focal point in the offense.

If Derrick Rose can stay healthy through the playoffs, the Bulls once again will be one of the favorites to represent the Eastern Conference in the NBA Finals.
