The Phoenix Suns are offering Brandon Knight a five-year, $70 million contract. It is the exact same contract Eric Bledsoe signed last offseason. While it seems fair to pay both guards equally, and promotes numerical symmetry, it is raising some eyebrows across the league. The prevailing sentiment among Suns fans, and many in the media, is that Eric Bledsoe has fallen out of favor in Phoenix. This is despite comments from Suns’ coach Jeff Hornacek and GM Ryan McDonough that they are not shopping Bledsoe.

Why does Bledsoe have to go? The Suns were successful with a two-PG lineup in 2014. In 2015, it was the three-headed PG that was their undoing. It sounds crazy to spend $140 million on two PGs. However, in today’s NBA in might not be. The salary cap is due to increase in 2016. The cap is also rumored to skyrocket again in 2017. By the beginning of next season those contracts won’t look as obtuse.

I think the panic from Suns fans is five years without the playoffs, and they play in the brutal Western Conference. However, a panic trade is not the answer. The Suns are looking to make an even bigger splash by going after LaMarcus Aldridge and Kevin Love. While the Suns are on the guest list for the big free agent party, they aren’t getting the VIP band with bottle service. The Suns should run with both guards. It might work out. If it doesn’t, one of the guards could be moved if the right trade comes along. The contracts for both players will look like a steal when 2017 rolls around.
