One of the first head-scratching deals of NBA free agency went down on Wednesday when the Toronto Raptors dished out $60 million over four years to DeMarre Carroll. The defensive-minded small forward averaged 12.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game for the Atlanta Hawks last season.
DeMarre Carroll agrees to a 4-year, $60 million deal with Toronto, sources confirm to ESPN. No options. That guy has come a long, long way.

Carroll’s stock soared last season after posting career highs in points and shooting percentage. Prior to 2014, Carroll was a journeyman wing player who bounced all around the NBA. Before joining the Hawks in 2013, he had played with four teams in four years and never averaged more than 16 minutes per game.
He’s an outstanding defender and a true team player, a rarity in today’s NBA, so this contract won’t be all bad for the Raptors. Mike Budenholzer’s offensive system in Atlanta did a great job of sharing the scoring load around the roster, so expect Carroll’s scoring averages to drop in Toronto.
