To say the first two days of NBA free agency haven’t gone as planned for the New York Knicks would be a colossal understatement. The once destination franchise has struck out on every major free agent, most recently losing out on Greg Monroe to the Milwaukee Bucks.

You read that right. A star player chose Milwaukee over New York. That should give you an idea of how the Knicks are viewed around the league. After failing to sign Monroe, the Knicks now have set their sights on center Robin Lopez according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports.

According to ESPN, Lopez met with the Knicks in Los Angeles on Monday night after meeting with the Bucks earlier in the day. The Knicks don’t have a single center under contract for next season, so it makes a ton of sense for the Knicks to kick the tires on every free agent big man.

With Tyson Chandler and Monroe now off the market, the only starting centers available are Lopez, DeAndre Jordan, and Marc Gasol. Gasol is extremely likely to re-sign with the Memphis Grizzlies in the coming days, and Jordan seems to have narrowed his choices down to the Dallas Mavericks and the two Los Angeles teams. If the Knicks lose out again with Lopez, it’s anyone’s guess what they’ll do at center next season, but it definitely won’t be pretty.

Lopez was Portland’s starting center for the past two seasons. The former first-round pick out of Stanford averaged 9.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per game in 2014-15 after having a career year the previous season with 11.1 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. The 7-footer won’t give you a lot on the offensive end but he’s an adequate rebounder one of the better defensive big men in the league.
