Orlando Magic Should Explore Jumping Into LaMarcus Aldridge Sweepstakes

LaMarcus Aldridge is the gold standard of the 2015 NBA class, and the Orlando Magic should explore jumping into the sweepstakes to land the talented power forward. To be realistic, Aldridge coming to Orlando is probably a long shot. But if the front office was willing to shell out big money to bring in Paul Millsap, then trying to lure Aldridge to the Magic Kingdom should be a no-brainer.

The Magic are weak at the power forward position, and judging by their ill-fated pursuit of Millsap, this is the position Orlando will focus on during the free agency period. Now that Millsap is back with the Atlanta Hawks, this may be the Magic’s chance to make a run at Aldridge.

Based off what they offered Millsap, Orlando can guarantee Aldridge $80 million over four years, which would be enough to pique his interest. But obtaining Aldridge will not be easy. At least five other teams in bigger markets will be offering him the same contract, including the San Antonio Spurs, who are stocked with the talent to make a push for a championship.

Then there is the question of whether or not Aldridge would be willing to join a rebuilding project in Orlando. Make no mistake, the Magic have talented pieces, and if they are put into the right places, they could make a run next year. But in reality, Orlando is at least three years away from being a serious contender, and Aldridge may not be too keen on waiting that long to contend for a championship.

So although getting Aldridge would be a stretch, it wouldn’t hurt if the Magic made him an offer. Orlando needs a power forward who can stretch the floor, and Aldridge can do that in spades. Might as well make an attempt to bring him to central Florida.
