The Philadelphia 76ers might not sign any top-dollar free agents with their massive cap space this summer, but that will not stop General Manager Sam Hinkie from trying to add whatever talent he can to his squad this offseason.

The Sixers struck a deal late Wednesday night with the Sacramento Kings in exchange for guard and former No. 8 overall pick Nik Stauskas, as well as veterans Carl Landry, Jason Thompson, and a protected future first round pick, in exchange for overseas players to be named later.

While this is a small move on the surface, it is a quietly fantastic move for the Sixers for a few reasons. First, their roster as it stands right now lacks any kind of reliable outside shooting. Stauskas struggled during his rookie season with the Kings, but that organization is as dysfunctional as they come and being a first year player in that kind of environment can certainly mess with your confidence. When Stauskas is hitting from the outside, he can be dynamite to watch play.

Secondly, the Sixers are a very young team, and one that needs a voice in the locker room. Both Landry and Thompson are NBA veterans, and both should be great leaders for the young players on the Sixers to emulate over time.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, it gives Sixers fans a sliver of hope of promise in terms of their perimeter options. Stauskas is only 21 years old, he can play both guard positions, and he possesses a sweet shooting stroke that helped get him into this league. It would not surprise me at all if he became a fan favorite the same way Kyle Korver did during his time with the club, emerging from relative obscurity on his way to capturing the city’s love everytime he rose up for a 3-point shot. I’m not saying he will be as good as Korver was for them during his stint in Philly, but that excitement of seeing a player of his caliber get hot from the outside is certainly the jolt of energy these fans need right now.

In terms of the Kings, this is clearly a salary dump move to position themselves to get Rajon Rondo, as well as perhaps Monta Ellis if they can afford him as well.

This won’t be a game-changing move for either team, but in terms of the Sixers, at least the fans will have three players they can look forward to watching help in shaping the future outlook of this very young team.
