The Sacramento Kings might be in total disarray, but that did not stop them from landing a bona fide shooter and proven champion in Marco Belinelli in the form of a three-year, $19 million dollar deal.

Belinelli’s exit from his former team, the San Antonio Spurs, who he spent the last two seasons with, is a real head-scratcher for many reasons. It seemed as though the Spurs were grooming Belinelli to become their next Manu Ginobili after he retired, and it appeared as though Belinelli was very happy to remain with the Spurs, a team he passed on more money to join in the summer of 2013 when he was a free agent.

The Spurs are the most stable and consistent team in basketball, and now Belinelli will join the most dysfunctional franchise in arguably all of sports right now in the Kings. He will now be a member of a team that is destined to not make the playoffs for a long time given their lackluster ownership and questionable decision making.

He was quoted before as saying that he was focused on getting paid this summer because he was not that young anymore by NBA standards, so it is understandable why he would want a more lucrative contract. But it is also surprising, given how good he was for the Spurs over the last two seasons, that he could not have convinced the Kings’ to sign him to a one-year deal at a good price, thus allowing him to bet on himself this year and take his chances in the open market next summer when the salary cap goes up.

It is surprising considering the Spurs were interested in bringing him back, and they probably could have offered him a very similar contract he signed with the Kings at some point next week once LaMarcus Aldridge makes his decision. The only logical explanation is that the Kings offered Belinelli a bigger role, perhaps even being their starting shooting guard. But is that worth not making the playoffs for the next three seasons? I do not believe it is.
