Sacramento Kings Blow Money On Marco Belinelli

As I wrote in an article I posted this morning, the Sacramento Kings are reaching new levels of dysfunction, and their reported three-year $19 million deal with free agent two-guard Marco Belinelli, is a perfect example.

The Kings threw four-years and $64 million at free agent, Wesley Matthews, before he decided to sign with the Dallas Mavericks. Feeling spurned by Matthews’ decision, the team was so desperate to acquire a shooter that they overpaid for Belinelli. He may be good for some quick-scoring off the bench from time to time, but Belinelli isn’t a consistent enough option to deserve over $6 million a season.

Two seasons ago, Belinelli had a career year for the San Antonio Spurs, but last season he regressed and looked like a shell of himself. In 2014-15, Belinelli averaged nine points per game, shot 42 percent from the field, including 37 percent from 3-point range, in 22 minutes per contest. At this stage of his career, Belinelli is nothing but a stand-still shooter, and the fact that both shooting percentages dropped over five percent from the 2013-14 season is a bit troubling.

We still don’t know who’s calling the shots for the Kings. When head coach, George Karl, signed his contract in February, it was reported that he would have final say on personnel decisions, but when Karl tried to trade DeMarcus Cousins to the Los Angeles Lakers last week, the Kings told him he wasn’t authorized to trade Cousins. The team has been reportedly seeking to fire Karl with cause, but no final decision has been made. Belinelli seems like a Karl signing to me, but I find it hard to believe that the team would allow him to make personnel decisions at this point. There’s so much dysfunction with the Kings, that I’m not even sure they know what’s going on.

In the end, the Kings overpaid for Belinelli, but there’s a bigger issue with the entire landscape of the organization. Congratulations to Belinelli for cashing in on a vulnerable team, and earning a big payday. As for the Kings, when the team thinks about doing something, they should do the exact opposite because they would probably be more successful.
