The New York Knicks clearly aren’t having the success in free agency they hoped they would this week, but Phil Jackson and company are making some solid additions nonetheless. In need of depth at forward, the Knicks have made an incredibly wise decision by signing Derrick Williams, formerly of the Sacramento Kings.

At just 24 years old, Williams’ best basketball is still in front of him. Playing for Sacramento for the past two seasons has undoubtedly hindered his development, particularly last season when the Kings were seemingly using a turnstile strategy at power forward. The randomness of the rotation did not help any of the players involved, nor the team.

Williams had a respectable 2014-15 campaign as he averaged 15.2 points and five rebounds per 36 minutes. Considering Williams’ playing time was so sporadic in Sacramento, his per game averages can be thrown out the window, as they’re not truly indicative of how he played.

The Knicks used everyone from Amar’e Stoudemire to Andrea Bargnani and Jason Smith at the four last season — none of whom played particularly well. Thus, it’s entirely possible Williams will see significant playing time in a starting role. If not, he’ll still provide New York with much-needed depth at forward considering he can also play the three if necessary.

Williams still has time to blossom into the player many thought he would when the Minnesota Timberwolves drafted him at No. 2 overall out of Arizona in 2011. And he’s now in a perfect scenario to prove his worth on a big stage, as no matter how terrible the Knicks have been in recent years, the Madison Square Garden crowds still show up in droves.
