In what can only be described as an embarrassment of riches, the San Antonio Spurs have reportedly agreed to terms with free agent power forward LaMarcus Aldridge, formerly of the Portland Trail Blazers.

San Antonio appeared to be the prime destination for Aldridge if winning right away was a huge factor in his decision-making process. The Spurs are coming off a down year for their standards. Now, with Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green re-signed, and the addition of Aldridge, the Spurs have not only officially won the offseason, they’re also the clear favorites to win the NBA championship in 2016.

The Spurs can now go in a myriad of ways with their rotation. They could start Aldridge at center and keep Tim Duncan in a starting role at power forward. Or, play Aldridge at the four, use Duncan as their sixth-man and look elsewhere for a center. Perhaps they’ll even move Duncan to center and play Aldridge at power forward. Regardless of which strategy they ultimately implement, the addition of Aldridge will help keep Duncan fresh. This is huge to the Spurs title aspirations, as the postseason is oftentimes a battle of attrition as much as anything else.

The Phoenix Suns emerged as a possible destination for Aldridge over the past week, but it just never seemed feasible that a star whose had somewhat limited exposure in his career would sign with a franchise with no national following. While San Antonio isn’t a huge market, the Spurs brand has triumphed into territory many large market teams have yet to reach, which undoubtedly appealed to Aldridge.
