Los Angeles Clippers second-round draft pick Branden Dawson, out of Michigan State, made his Summer League debut today and he did not disappoint.

Dawson recorded a double-double in a loss to the Orlando Magic Blue Team, finishing with 14 points and 14 rebounds. He went 6-for-13 from the field and played an all-around impressive game.

One of the things that makes Dawson such a special player is his combination of size, strength and athleticism. The triple threat was on display today in Orlando. On numerous occasions, Dawson showed his ability in the open floor, galloping down the floor and making some eye-popping flushes.

If Dawson continues to shine in the Summer League, he will have a great opportunity to make the Clippers’ active roster. With DeAndre Jordan deciding not to come back to Los Angeles, there is a dire need for frontcourt help on that Clippers roster.

While Dawson isn’t all that big, standing 6-foot-6 and 230 pounds, he is ridiculously strong and is a scrappy player who loves to get his hands dirty. Remind you of another Michigan State forward in the NBA?

By losing Jordan, the Clippers lost their defensive identity. Dawson is a great defender and could help to fill the void left by Jordan. Dawson could also benefit from the Chris Paul lobs that Jordan is passing up.

Dawson is a name to watch out for this summer because he has the potential to make a big impact for the Clippers in the future.
