The Indiana Pacers took on the Miami Heat in the first NBA Orlando Summer League game of the year this morning, and it was the debut of No. 11 overall pick Myles Turner. He has received quite a bit of skepticism since being drafted, and he took a big step to prove those critics wrong with his performance.

Turner ended up playing 28 minutes today and scored 20 points to go along with eight rebounds and three blocks. There weren’t many reasons to critique his performance, although he did end up totaling five personal fouls throughout the game. If he can get the fouling issues under control, he looks like a very solid all-around player.

Larry Bird and Frank Vogel have made it very clear that they are excited about his potential and believe that he will be their starting center in the future.

Roy Hibbert is being shopped in trade talks, and there is a good chance that the Pacers will be able to move him. If that does end up happening, Turner will have a very good chance to start over Ian Mahinmi. He showed quite a few things Indiana and their fans should be very excited about, especially on the offensive end of the court.

He showed the ability to knock down the three-point shot, as well as step in and consistently hit from mid-range as well. Turner also scored from the post and was able to create space anytime he wanted. It was an impressive showing for sure, and he finished 8-for-11 from the field, while also knocking down all three of his free-throw attempts.

At 6-foot-11 and 238 pounds, Turner already has an NBA-ready body and is capable of stepping into minutes as a rookie. Assuming he can continue playing the same type of basketball that he showed today and making the necessary improvements, there is nothing holding him back from being a major impact player in his rookie season.

Perhaps the even more impressive thing is that Turner is just 19 years old and already has the complete all-around offensive game that he displayed.

Defensively, Turner showed the potential to protect the rim, which is an area that the Pacers need him to dominate in. While Hibbert may be on the trade block, he is still one of the best defensive centers in the league. Vogel has led the Pacers to one of the best defenses for the past few seasons, and they’ll need Turner to step up as the anchor of their defense.

It is going to be very interesting to watch the rest of the Pacers’ Summer League games to see whether or not Turner can continue playing the brand of basketball that he showed today in his debut.
