Keeping Reggie Jackson Was A Must For Detroit Pistons

Things haven’t gone the way the Detroit Pistons hoped thus far into free agency. The Pistons lost 25-year-old Greg Monroe to their division rival Milwaukee Bucks and failed to land any of the names they were hoping to, including their main target in Tobias Harris, who re-signed with the Orlando Magic. However, the Pistons were able to have a saving grace moment, as they’ve re-signed PG/SG Reggie Jackson to a five-year deal worth $80 million.

This deal was expected all along, but after such a disappointing start to free agency, it’s fair to assume the Pistons questioned their ability to even bring back a player who wanted to stay with the franchise. Jackson played well for Detroit last season after the Pistons acquired his services from the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Jackson can play either point guard or shooting guard, which undoubtedly helped him earn such a hefty contract. The Pistons simply haven’t known what to expect from Brandon Jennings on a yearly basis. NBA teams cannot flourish with such uncertainty at the point.

Going forward, if Jennings (who’s coming off a torn Achilles) is not traded prior to the start of the season, it’s likely he’ll back up Jackson, unless the organization ultimately decides to give Jennings another opportunity and moves Jackson to the two.

Detroit couldn’t afford to lose Jackson after losing Monroe, so, even if it’s for just one night, the Pistons have a reason to be excited.
