The Los Angeles Lakers didn’t land the big free agent they thought they would. LaMarcus AldridgeDraymond GreenDeMarre CarrollKevin Love and Jimmy Butler signed somewhere else. However, the past few days, the Lakers took an unexpected route as they landed Roy Hibbert via trade.

The Lakers sent a future second-round pick to the Indiana Pacers and they have to absorb the $15.5 million owed to him for next year. The deal can pay off hugely as Hibbert is under contract for one more year. Last season, Hibbert averaged 10.6 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.6 blocks. Despite Hibbert having lost a step from his two All-Star seasons, he is still a big upgrade defensively than any big the Lakers had last year. The Lakers primary concern is defense and Hibbert will help in that aspect.

The Lakers made two more moves on Sunday, as they signed Louis Williams and Brandon Bass. Williams signed a three-year, $21 million contract. Williams was the sixth man of the year award last year for the Toronto Raptors. He averaged 15.5 points and 2.1 assists. The move was a bit surprising considering the Lakers still have Nick Young, who signed a four-year, $21.5 million contract last year. If the Lakers find a trade partner for Young, signing Williams was a smart move.

After the Williams signing, the Lakers agreed to terms with Bass. The Lakers are in the process of clearing space for the 30-year-old veteran. Bass averaged 10.6 points and 4.9 rebounds last year. Bass’ bread and butter is his midrange jumper. He will also bring toughness to a Lakers team that needs it.

After what appeared to be a terrible offseason, the Lakers added some veterans that have produced on winning teams. The three players should have no problem fitting in on a very young Lakers team. Bass and Hibbert should help the Lakers on defense, while Williams will bring firepower off the bench.

The Lakers made a smart decision in trading for Hibbert, as they only have him for one season. If Hibbert plays like he did a few seasons ago, they will have an edge in re-signing him in the offseason.

The Lakers won’t compete for a title or maybe even a playoff spot, but 35-40 wins isn’t out of the question.
