In a somewhat confusing move, the Sacramento Kings added another piece to their frontcourt by signing former Memphis Grizzlies center Kosta Koufos to a four-year, $33 million deal.

Koufos is an incredibly underrated player who would help any team, so from a purely on-the-court standpoint, the move makes plenty of sense. However, Sacramento drafted Willie Cauley-Stein just under two weeks ago, and already have the incumbent DeMarcus Cousins, who’s one of the best big men in the NBA.

Now that the Kings have brought in Koufos, the uncertainty surrounding Cousins’ future with the organization will kick back up to a fever pitch. A team like the Kings that need help in so many different places typically doesn’t add to any part of the roster without a reason.

The loudest whispers surrounding the Kings heading into free agency suggested either HC George Karl would be fired, or Cousins would be moved because the two simply don’t gel and cannot work together going forward.

Sacramento did recently lose PF Derrick Williams to the New York Knicks, so an immediate addition to the frontcourt isn’t completely nonsensical. However, unless the Kings intend on going big with their starting lineup by pairing either Koufos or Cauley-Stein with Cousins, it’s fair to assume a corresponding move is in the works.
