The Detroit Pistons have reportedly agreed with point guard Reggie Jackson on a five-year, $80 million deal that will keep the 25-year-old in the Motor City for the foreseeable future.

Jackson was a mixed bag when he was traded to the Pistons mid-season from the Oklahoma City Thunder. He did average 17.6 PPG, 9.2 APG and 4.7 RPG, but his shooting marks were average at best (44 percent from the field and 33 percent from outside), and his turnovers were way too high (3.5 per game). He would have games where he would be absolutely brilliant and record triple-doubles, and then others when his shooting would be awful and his handles were extremely shaky.

He is the type of player that uses his blinding speed to get into the lane, which causes headaches for defenses that have to respect his ability to convert difficult layups in crowded lanes. Jackson still needs to work a lot on his shooting, especially from the perimeter, where he is simply not a reliable threat right now. He is still relatively young, but now that the Pistons believe he is worth $80 million, he has to improve his accuracy from the three-point line and mid-range area of the floor.

Personally, I think the Pistons could have probably afforded Cory Joseph of the San Antonio Spurs for a third of the amount they shelled out for Jackson. The Toronto Raptors instead snatched up Joseph with a four-year, $30 million deal this evening. Given that Joseph is already a lock-down defender with a much-improved jump shot, he could have been a better, cheaper alternative than a point guard who is still a so-so shooter and decent defender.

With that said, Jackson is a very good all-around player and gets more rebounds than a lot of players at his position. His ability to penetrate the lane opens up looks for him as well as his teammates, and now that the Pistons have shown confidence in him to be their point guard of the future, he must further elevate his game to become an elite guard in the NBA this coming season.
