Until this summer, the San Antonio Spurs hadn’t gone after a free agent as hard since the time they tried to woo Jason Kidd. That didn’t turn out so well, but this attempt with LaMarcus Aldridge went just fine. The main reason for that was head coach Gregg Popovich.

According to the San Antonio Express-News, Popovich’s pitch included an assurance that he will coach out the length of his contract, which expires in 2019. That is amazing, and it was also something that I speculated might happen if Aldridge decided to hop on board. But Pops declaring it before LaMarcus’ free agent decision was something I had not considered. This was quite a bold move by Popovich and the Spurs, and we could see them rewarded with a championship in the next few seasons as a result.

Aldridge is the only player in the NBA to average at least 23 PPG and 10 RPG in each of the last two seasons, and he should make the Spurs truly terrifying on the offensive end. Now fans have to wonder what kind of system Popovich will run with two low-post options like Aldridge and Tim Duncan. It is not a bad problem to have, but this is something the Spurs must figure out before next season starts.

One thing they don’t have to worry about is whether Popovich will be coaching past 2016.
