San Antonio Spurs Get Stronger After Signing David West

The San Antonio Spurs continued to own the offseason on Monday, when the team and free agent forward, David West, reportedly came to an agreement on a one-year, $1 million deal. After the acquisition of LaMarcus Aldridge, the Spurs were re-anointed the favorites to win the NBA title, and adding West only solidifies that expectation. With Tim Duncan entering his last season, the Spurs look primed to send him out on top.

West opted out of his $12 million contract with the Indiana Pacers in order to become a free agent, and look for greener pastures. It’s refreshing to see a player accept $11 million less so that he can go to a team and try to win an NBA title. The Pacers weren’t going to accomplish that anytime soon, and West isn’t getting younger, so I applaud his decision.

The Spurs not only add more quality depth to the frontcourt, but the move keeps West from joining the Cleveland Cavaliers, who are likely to repeat as Eastern Conference champions, and would face the Spurs in the NBA Finals, if the Spurs can beat the Golden State Warriors. With a frontline of Duncan, Aldridge, West, and Boris Diaw, the Spurs are going to be much improved on both ends of the court, which would put less pressure on Kawhi Leonard, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker.

For a team that rarely uses free agency to its advantage, the Spurs have crushed this offseason. Not only has the team made itself contenders for next season, the organization has a solid core for the foreseeable future. Gregg Popovich, R.C. Buford, and Duncan deserve a hero’s welcome during opening night at AT&T Center in the fall for what has been accomplished.
