After parting ways with two important pieces of their backcourt over the past two weeks, the Toronto Raptors have finally made an addition to the unit by signing free agent PG Cory Joseph, formerly of the San Antonio Spurs.

Trading former backup PG Greivis Vasquez to the Milwaukee Bucks on draft night was not a popular move, but somewhat understandable considering he brought back some picks.

However, now that the Raptors have agreed to pay Joseph nearly $8 million annually, allowing the current Sixth Man of the Year Lou Williams to leave town to join the Los Angeles Lakers, seems like a terribly bad decision considering Williams signed for less money per season — and overall.

The Spurs wanted to keep Joseph in town, but after re-signing Kawhi Leonard and adding LaMarcus Aldridge, keeping Joseph was simply no longer an option. At 6-foot-3 and 185 pounds, Joseph projects to be Toronto’s backup at point guard behind Kyle Lowry, but could also play shooting guard if necessary.

Joseph averaged 13.3 points, 4.7 assists and 4.8 rebounds per 36 minutes with San Antonio last season, which is nothing to sneeze at. However, Williams averaged 22.2 points per 36 minutes, which is tough to replace.

Joseph is by no means a bad player, but coming off the bench, he has big shoes to fill in attempts to replace Williams as Toronto’s sixth-man. And after both Lowry and DeMar DeRozan missed significant time last season, the Raptors know full well how important the role Joseph will be playing is. It just seems that doing anything and everything they could to keep Williams made more sense considering how he flourished in the same role last season.
