Even though there was plenty of reason to believe Kevin Garnett was going to call it quits after the 2014-15 NBA season, the big man has announced he will return to play for the Minnesota Timberwolves in the fall and continue his role as a mentor for the rising team.

“I’m incredibly excited and rejuvenated to be a part of this talented, committed team,” Garnett said, according to Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN Twin Cities.

Wolfson also has reported Garnett will sign a two-year deal with no options on the second year.

It is obvious the 39-year-old will not be a major contributor offensively, which was essentially known when the Timberwolves made a trade with the Brooklyn Nets to acquire him in February. With that said, Minnesota is confident Garnett will be able to teach the team’s young prospects how to play the game at a high level on a consistent basis. Basically, Garnett’s guidance could help mold the Timberwolves into playoff contenders in the next couple of years.

The biggest benefactors of Garnett’s presence in practice and on the sidelines will be small forward Andrew Wiggins and rookie Karl-Anthony Towns, with the latter being the one every person interested in the Timberwolves will keep their eye on.

Many believe Garnett’s work as a player will transition into an ownership or executive role with the Timberwolves once he retires in the next year or two. For that reason, it makes sense why he is investing so much into a team that has no shot of giving him another ring before he hangs it up.
