Kevin Garnett's Return Huge For Minesota Timberwolves And Karl-Anthony Towns

When the Minnesota Timberwolves re-acquired forward Kevin Garnett last season in a trade with the Brooklyn Nets, it was widely expected that Garnett would finish the season where he began his career and then retire this offseason. Instead, after evaluating things, Garnett has decided to return to the team for the 2015-16 season after signing a two-year deal on Tuesday.

“I’m incredibly excited and rejuvenated to be a part of this talented, committed team,” Garnett said, in a statement.

While Garnett is well past his prime and likely won’t contribute much on the court, his presence and knowledge will be extremely important for the development of the Timberwolves’ No. 1 overall pick, Karl-Anthony Towns. While Towns projects to be a superstar down the road, he’s still relatively raw and will take some time to develop. With Garnett back in Minnesota, that will only speed up the process for the 19-year-old rookie.

Not only will Garnett’s presence help Towns learn some nuances of the post-game in the NBA, but it will also help to provide leadership for a young team. With players such as Andrew Wiggins, Zach LaVine, Anthony Bennett, Shabazz Muhammad, Tyus Jones and Towns forming the Timberwolves’ nucleus, the team’s talent-level is extremely high but very young. Garnett will be relied upon to supply that veteran leadership and hopefully instill a winning mentality into a team that desperately seeks to be successful.

The impact of Garnett’s return likely won’t reflect on the Timberwolves’ record in 2015-16, but in a couple of years, when the team makes the playoffs and Garnett is retired, everyone will look back on the importance of Garnett’s presence this upcoming season. In sports, it’s not always about the talent you possess, it’s about how you use the talent that’s important. Each player on Minnesota’s roster will benefit from Garnett’s teachings.
