Wesley Johnson Is A Nice Addition For Los Angeles Clippers
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Clippers have reportedly agreed to a deal with free agent forward Wesley Johnson on the one-year veteran minimum, which would be $1.1 million in Johnson’s case. Johnson has spent the last two seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, so he won’t even have to move, which I’m sure was enticing to him. Last season, Johnson averaged 9.9 points and 4.2 rebounds per game for the Lakers.

The Clippers were searching for some wing help after the team traded Matt Barnes earlier in the offseason. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Johnson step into Barnes’ role and flourish as a solid defender and a corner three-point shooter. Johnson has never really been in the right situation to succeed, after spending his time in the NBA with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Phoenix Suns and the Lakers. Being with the Clippers will be his best shot to maximize his potential.

Johnson turns 28 on July 11, which could mean he’s about ready to enter his prime. If he gets an expanded role with the Clippers, 2015-16 could be a breakout season for Johnson, but if he doesn’t fit in, or has a down year, the Clippers are only out $1 million, which made it a no-brainer type of deal for the team.

While signing Johnson won’t compensate for the loss of DeAndre Jordan, or possibly Jamal Crawford, it’s a low-risk, step in the right direction. The team still needs to find a rim-protector and rebounder in the middle, and likely another scorer off the bench, but signing Johnson was a solid addition for both parties.
