Jeremy Lin Makes Charlotte Hornets Playoff Contenders

Jeremy Lin has agreed to a two-year deal, worth at least $4 million, with the Charlotte Hornets. Lin is the guy that actually broke the news, as he posted a picture of the Hornets’ logo on Instagram and captioned the photo with “Lets gooooooo! #BuzzCity.” Lin, who spent the last season with the Los Angeles Lakers, provides the Hornets with a backup point guard to starter Kemba Walker and a great scorer off the bench, which is an area where the team has been lacking in recent years.

Last season, Lin averaged 11.2 points per game, 4.6 assists and 2.6 rebounds, while only playing 25 minutes per contest. Those are some pretty solid numbers considering he was playing for the 21-61 Lakers. Lin is still only 26 years old, and he’s shown the ability to take over games and put up points in a hurry. He could earn an increase in playing time next season, as I could see head coach Steve Clifford playing Lin and Walker in the same back-court at times.

The Hornets’ biggest weakness in recent years has been the team’s inability to knock down shots. Clifford has a team that can defend and rebound with anybody, but when the Hornets only average 94 points in a game, like they did last season, it makes it hard to beat anyone. The organization has finally taken notice and, in addition to Lin, has acquired Nicolas Batum and Spencer Hawes through offseason trades. Although both players had a bit of a down year last season, both have the capability to hit shots from the outside consistently.

While the Lin acquisition likely won’t get much attention, it’s a nice low-risk signing for the Hornets, and if everything bounces the team’s way, it could result in a return to the playoffs in 2015-16. If it doesn’t work out, there’s no long-term implications for the Hornets.
