The Miami Heat haven’t been too busy since free agency opened up, although they were able to re-sign both Goran Dragic and Dwyane Wade. Outside of keeping their two main free agents on board, they hadn’t gone out and brought in a new face. Pat Riley knew that he had to bring in depth for their bench, and he was able to do just that by signing former Phoenix Suns dynamic shooting guard Gerald Green to a one-year contract.

It may not seem like a huge deal for the Heat, but the signing of Green is going to be one of the most underrated moves of the free agency period. Keeping him on a one-year deal continues his quest to prove himself and will give the Heat the best version that they could possibly ask for of him.

Green may not be a star, but he is going to fit a major need for the Heat during the 2015-16 season. While Wade is going to be the starting shooting guard every night that he is healthy, the Heat are still going to want to keep him well rested throughout the course of the season. There will be nights when Erik Spoelstra rests Wade when he’s healthy and nights when Wade is forced to sit out with nagging injury issues, and that is when Green will step up to the challenge and either start or at least pick up major minutes.

During the 2014-15 NBA season with the Suns, Green ended up averaging 11.9 points per game. He shot 41.6 percent from the field overall while knocking down 35.4 percent from behind the three-point line.

Those numbers show exactly why Riley chose to target him, and his offensive game will be unleashed with the Heat. His perimeter shooting will help the Heat space the floor, and his athleticism and ability to get to the rim will help replace Wade when he is on the bench. It simply gives Spoelstra another piece to work with that is more than capable of putting up big numbers on the box score.

At 29 years old, Green is in his prime and is starting yet another chapter in his roller-coaster career. He has had his share of ups and downs, but signing with the Heat should be a very good step. Expect to see him continue the strong scoring that he showed during his tenure with the Suns and be a big piece of the puzzle for the Heat during the 2015-16 season. Miami won’t be getting a superstar with this move, but they will be getting a very solid role player capable of taking games over with his scoring ability from time to time.
